    Your presenter, Ircel Harrison, is an itinerant educator. He spends his time encouraging and equipping leaders through his work with the Central Baptist Theological Seminary and Pinnacle Leadership Associates. He is an ACC certified coach with the International Coaching Federation, and co-author of DISCIPLE DEVELOPMENT COACHING.

Problems are acknowledged in the process, but why spend so much energy on what’s not working when you can be spending creative and innovative energy on what is working?

    Faith communities are looking for assistance in meeting the increasingly complex challenges of mission, ministry and congregational life.  The programmatic, cookie-cutter answers once offered by denominations and traditional consultants are now often inadequate to meet these challenges. The need is growing for consultants who can provide more personalized, context-specific help to faith communities.

    To meet this growing need for qualified consultants, the Center for Congregational Health, in partnership with the Interim Ministry Network, is offering a process to train and develop consultants to work with faith communities.

    The dates for the Residential Lab portion of this training  are October 10-14, 2016.  The application deadline is September 16, 2016.  The lab will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday (10/10/16) and conclude Friday (10/14/16) before noon. This portion of the training will be held on the campus of the Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville, North Carolina.  Specific dates and times for the fieldwork telephone conferences will be scheduled during the Residential Lab.

    Costs:

    • Standard tuition: $1665 (includes single housing, meals, breaks); $1435 (for commuters)
    • AIIM and IMN members: $1565 (includes single housing, meals, breaks); $1335 (for commuters)

    The time between permanent pastors is an important time for a faith community.  Members often operate at maximum capacity as they make crucial decisions about the future direction of the congregation. Their experience is enhanced by engaging a leader specifically trained in the dynamics of transition.

    This conference will prepare participants to:

    • Develop a covenant with a congregation that clearly describes the responsibilities of the interim minister and the congregation.
    • Enter a congregation in order to more quickly join with them in ministry.
    • Study the health of a congregation and determine where they might need assistance.
    • Articulate the role of the interim pastor in planning for the congregation’s future, including appropriate contact with the Pastor Search/Call Committee.
    • Prepare the congregation for the coming of a new minister.
    • Exit a congregation in a way that models good closure for ministry and the opening of a new chapter in the faith community’s life.

    Interim Ministry 1 is designed to meet the basic needs of traditional interim ministers. For those who want to apply for advanced training in intentional interim ministry (Interim Ministry 2), this introductory course qualifies as 17 of the 85 required hours.

    • methods by which a congregation can work with these focus points;
    • additional resources to assist the congregation with conflict and other possible issues.

    Participants must complete the introductory course, Interim Ministry 1 (The Work of the Minister), before they are eligible to enroll in this training event.

    Many congregations are facing significant challenges—declining attendance, lower giving, and a lack of engagement with young adults, to name a few. This session will provide an overview of some of the most recent research on US congregations and some insights into how congregations can be healthier and more effective in their mission and ministry.

    Dr. Chris Gambill, Director of the Center for Congregational Health will be the presenter. As a Baptist pastor and consultant, he has experience with the challenges of today’s faith institutions.  He will speak from this experience and share what he has learned about flourishing congregations.  Chris has been with the Center for Congregational Health since its beginning in 1992 and currently directs the Center’s work. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University (B.A.), Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Capella University (Ph.D.). Chris received certification as an Intentional Interim Minister through the Center for Congregational Health®. He has previously been Sr. Consultant at the Center, and is a Board Certified Coach. Chris is also an ordained Baptist minister and has served previously as a pastor, interim pastor and as a campus minister at UNC-Charlotte, NC State University, and Appalachian State University. He and his wife Joy also served as student workers in Taiwan, Republic of China. He has extensive experience helping individuals and groups in managing interpersonal and intergroup conflict; developing capacity and skill in utilizing emotional intelligence; creating participative processes for strategic planning; facilitating staff team development; improving job performance; developing effective communication and dialogue processes; and providing individual and team leadership coaching.

    Understanding the fine distinctions between “CHANGE” and “TRANSITIONS” is crucial for those ministers serving in a connectional system. This topic is addressed in "Pastoral Transitions," a special course being held on September 28th and 29th at the Heathman Lodge, 7801 NE Greenwood Dr., Vancouver, WA. This event is sponsored by Bishop Staccato Powell, Presiding Prelate of the Western Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church. The course will take place during the “Explosion 2017 - Dare to Believe Festival.”

    This course consists of five hours, and will be conducted over two days:  On Thursday (9/28/17), we'll begin at 10:30 AM and end at 3:30 PM (breaks/lunch are included during this time-frame).  On Friday (9/29/17), we'll start at  10:30 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM.  Participants will receive a certificate in “Pastoral Transitions”, issued by the Center for Congregational Health.

Also, participants will experience an introduction to group coaching and leadership with groups.  Special attention will be given to leadership in team settings and in ministry settings, as well as being attentive to leadership connected with faith and spirituality.  Coaching principles and practiced are disseminated through experiential practice.  Attention is given to how one can strengthen his/her everyday leadership role by using the skills and perspective of the art of coaching.  The International Coach Federation Core Competencies and Code of Ethics are presented and utilized in this session.  This is a prerequisite for Coach Training 2 Residential Lab.  A certificate and description of the hours will be issued for use toward certification.

    Coach Training 2: Residential Lab: (36 Hours)

    Before signing up for this training, one must have completed Coach Training 1.

    Building on the skills and practices from Coach Training 1, the Coach Training 2 Residential Lab will continue to utilize the structure of the core competencies and increase knowledge and skill on the practice of coaching.  The residential lab will focus on using assessment tools in coaching, working with groups and teams, and other approaches to coaching--including adaptive leadership, appreciative inquiry, and asset/strengths based awareness.  It is expected that participants will have a thorough working knowledge of ICF Core Competencies and be able to exhibit those competencies through application and experiential exercises throughout this lab.  Participants will receive coaching feedback, supervision and suggestions regarding application to their own setting. These hours are applicable for ICF and Board Certified Credentialing.

    Coaching Practicum follows the Residential Lab, and is included in the cost for the course.  The Practicum consists of a series of teleconferences and/or webinars (90 minute sessions) scheduled one per month, for 6 months.  We've designed the Practicum to accommodate each participant in coaching another participant from the group, and to receive written core competency based observation and feedback from their fellow participants and the facilitator.

    Interim Ministry 1 is designed to meet the basic needs of traditional interim ministers. For those who want to apply for advanced training in intentional interim ministry (Interim Ministry 2), this introductory course qualifies as 17 of the 85 required hours.

    The conference begins on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. and will end on Wednesday,February 21, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.

    This training event is sponsored by the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.  However, non-ABSC pastors are welcome to participate.  The total cost for ABSC pastors (and staff) is $255 (for single accommodations, meals, and breaks), or $215 (for commuters; meals and breaks included).  The total cost for non-ABSC pastors is $700 (single) or $660 (commuter).

    In spring 2018 (April 23-27), the Center will pilot a “combo event” that will combine IM1 and IM2 classroom work, followed by individual fieldwork. This 5-day course will begin on Monday at 1:00 p.m. and end at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. This course is designed for those individuals who have already discerned God’s call to interim ministry.

    Participants are required to submit assignments in advance of the class time and/or bring completed work to the event. It will be an intensive learning experience that will prepare attendees to serve in the role of IIM, but will be a more cost effective format for the student, eliminating the additional travel, lodging and meals involved with two separate courses.

    Applicants who previously completed IM1 and who now wish to complete IM2 can join the on-going class at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday and will finish at 4:15 p.m. on Friday.

    The conference begins on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. and will end on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 4:15 p.m.

    The cost of tuition/materials is $1,690.  This cost includes a $100/person discount for this pilot event.  The TOTAL cost to attend is $2,075 (includes a single on-site room for four nights, meals, and breaks), or $1,845 (for commuters; meals and breaks included).

    This 5-day course focuses on the work of the congregation, and how the interim minister facilitates this work.  There is a concentration on learning about the formation, orientation, and facilitation of a team to work on the five focus points of an interim congregation.  The classroom work is followed by fieldwork, and leads to recognition as an intentional interim minister.

    The conference begins on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., and will end on Friday, April 27, 2018 before noon.  All sessions will take place at Camp Paron in Paron, Arkansas.

    Coach Training 2: Residential Lab: (36 Hours)  POSTPONED

    Applications for this training will be reviewed AFTER the applicant has completed Coach Training 1.

    Building on the skills and practices from Coach Training 1, the Coach Training 2 Residential Lab will continue to utilize the structure of the core competencies and increase knowledge and skill on the practice of coaching.  The residential lab will focus on using assessment tools in coaching, working with groups and teams, and other approaches to coaching--including adaptive leadership, appreciative inquiry, and asset/strengths based awareness.  It is expected that participants will have a thorough working knowledge of ICF Core Competencies and be able to exhibit those competencies through application and experiential exercises throughout this lab.  Participants will receive coaching feedback, supervision and suggestions regarding application to their own setting. These hours are applicable for ICF and Board Certified Credentialing.

    Coaching Practicum follows the Residential Lab, and is included in the cost for the course.  The Practicum consists of a series of teleconferences and/or webinars (90 minute sessions) scheduled one per month, for 6 months.  We've designed the Practicum to accommodate each participant in coaching another participant from the group, and to receive written core competency based observation and feedback from their fellow participants and the facilitator.

    Coach Training 1: Intro to Coaching (16 hours)

    What is coaching, and how might I use it to strengthen my performance as a leader? Participants are introduced to the structure of coaching relationships, plus an introduction to a variety of coaching resources and tools.  Participants will also experience an introduction to group coaching and leadership with groups.  Special attention will be given to leadership in team settings and in ministry settings, as well as being attentive to leadership connected with faith and spirituality. The International Coach Federation Core Competencies and Code of Ethics are presented and utilized. This course is a prerequisite for Coach Training 2. A certificate and description of the hours will be issued for use toward ICF certification.

    Interim Ministry 2 consists of a five-day classroom experience, plus approximately six months of individual fieldwork, including monthly conference calls. This particular class will be offered in the following format:

    Interim Ministry 2 allows participants to practice and hone newly acquired skills, and equips trained traditional interim ministers to lead a congregation through a systematic assessment of its pastoral needs and congregational goals by looking closely at five areas of a healthy congregation, referred to as Focus Points:

    • Heritage: reviewing how the congregation has been shaped and formed
    • Mission: defining and redefining sense of purpose and direction.
    • Leadership: reviewing the congregation’s ways of organizing, and developing an effective clergy and lay leadership structure.
    • Connections: discovering all the relationships and networks a faith community builds beyond itself.
    • Future: synthesizing the interim work, activating and training the pastoral search/call committee, and coaching the committee (as requested) to accomplish its work.

    Those who meet the course requirements receive a certificate of completion as an Intentional Interim Minister, issued by the Center for Congregational Health.

    A team is characterized by shared vision and leadership, definable goals, clear roles/responsibilities and an effective process.  Strong distinction is drawn in this module between the group as board or committee, and the differences from the qualities of a team.  Relationships displaying respect, trust, and enjoyment for one another are essential to a team.  A team also has a positive plan for addressing conflict.  Coaching teams requires the ability to build a strong sense of consensus, and the ability to handle such distractions as monopolizers, the withdrawn, and the angry.  Using ICF Core Competencies , this module addresses and supports the development of specific skills and tools for working most effectively with teams.

    Coaching is an art.  It is developed over time.  The essential principles and practices are useful for a wide variety of settings.  Continued growth and development of Coaching skills is necessary.  Many in the church, business, or non-profit world have the responsibility to lead and work with a large cast of participants from wide and diverse backgrounds.  It is expected that participants will have a thorough working knowledge of ICF Core Competencies and be able to exhibit those competencies and ethical guidelines through application and experiential exercises in coaching, observation and feedback.

You may sign up for an individual session, one-on-one, with your entire staff, and/or bring a group of lay leaders to the virtual meeting. The focus of the session is entirely up to you—whether you need help addressing specific COVID-19 related challenges or more general ministry concerns or issues. After the initiation conversation, if you wish to have additional sessions we will work with you and your congregation's financial situation to explore the paths forward.

He is a graduate of Wake Forest University (B.A.), Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Capella University (Ph.D.). Chris is also an ordained Baptist minister and has served previously as a pastor, interim pastor and as a campus minister at UNC-Charlotte, NC State University, and Appalachian State University. He and his wife Joy also served as student workers in Taiwan, Republic of China. He has extensive experience helping individuals and groups in managing interpersonal and intergroup conflict; developing capacity and skill in utilizing emotional intelligence; creating participative processes for strategic planning; facilitating staff team development; improving job performance; developing effective communication and dialogue processes; and providing individual and team leadership coaching.

    Pinnacle Leadership Associates is launching Summit Coach Training to equip coaches who will guide others as they grow into the persons that God has called them to be.  All classes will be offered in an online format and taught by credentialed coach practitioners.

    Students completing the four required courses successfully will receive our in-house certification--Summit Certified Life Coach (SCLC).  Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available to those who request them. Hours can be applied toward a professional coach credential.  Pinnacle is applying for all courses to be ICF Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH) but all hours taken will qualify for the ICF Portfolio track for ACC certification.

    Basic Commitments of Summit Coach Training

    CREDENTIAL

    Instructors

    IRCEL HARRISON

    Ircel Harrison is an ACC credentialed coach with the International Coaching Federation and a Certified Professional Life Coach with the Professional Christian Coaching Institute.  He has over 1000 hours of experience coaching individuals and groups in a number of settings. He is Associate Supplemental Professor of Missional Theology for Central Seminary (Shawnee, KS) and has taught coaching classes there.  He is certified to administer several assessments including the Peoplemap, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the DiSC Personality Profile, the Innovator’s DNA Assessment, and the Social+Emotional Intelligence Profile.

    He is co-author (with Mark Tidsworth) of Disciple Development Coaching©, author of The Coaching Leader:  Coaching Groups and Teams, and a frequent contributor to Christian Coaching Magazine. He is an affiliate member of the institute of Coaching and a member of Christian Coaching Network International.

    BETH KENNETT

    Beth Kennett is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credentialed by the International Coach Federation (ICF) and is an ordained minister with standing in the United Church of Christ. Beth is the coordinator of coaching services at the Center for Congregational Health and has experience as pastor, educator, denomination staff, conflict management facilitator, and has worked in the areas of Faith and Vocation and leadership development training.

    Beth holds a Master of Divinity degree, as well as Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music education and Flute Performance, with continuing education in a variety of topics including the Workplace Big 5 Personality Assessment, Advanced Coach Training, Conflict Management and Mediation, Intentional Interim Ministry, and Facilitating Difficult Conversations.

    Outside of work Beth enjoys an array of activities from creatively playing with textiles to make new things by knitting and sewing, enjoying playing music with friends, and engaging in training and competing in track and field events in the Senior Games.

It is designed for those individuals who have already discerned God’s call to interim ministry. Interim Ministry Training focuses on the work of the interim minister as he/she leads a congregation through the time of transition, as well as on the work of the congregation during this journey.

    To enhance the learning experience, participants are required to complete six pre-work assignments. Class begins on at 9:00 AM (ET) and ends at 4:00 PM each day, Monday - Friday. Fieldwork starts about 30 days after the last day of class and consists of five conference calls conducted in approximately 30-day intervals. Fieldwork expectations are explained in-depth during the training event.     Training Facilitator is Rev. Dr. Les Robinson. Les worked with the Center for Congregational Health for 21 years before he retired in June 2017. Not only has Les written the training curriculum for Intentional Interim Ministry, but many trainers for educating Intentional Interim Ministers across the world have also adapted his curriculum.

    As a church, and as individual believers, we are called to be a light in the world. One way to be a light in the world is to stand out in the way we communicate with others. We live in a world where every conversation with family members, every decision made within a church, every meeting with co-workers and every post on social media has the potential to ignite an ugly conflict with those we care about. What passes as “communication” more often disconnects and separates us from others, and escalates conflictual situations.

    This course session is based on this premise: before we can communicate and connect compassionately with others, we must take the first step to connect compassionately with ourselves AND with God.

    Participants in this session will be introduced to a framework that can help them identify their feelings, thoughts, and needs in order to lay a healthier foundation for compassionate communication that may actually prevent a conflict.

    Enlist a Sunday school class, a mission group, your deacons, elders or other leadership bodies to join us in this webinar. Targeted invitations will allow the work of the training to continue in healthy ways in relationships and in your church.
