Ministry amid political polarization—how to help your congregation manage in 2024

This workshop is designed to provide practical tools and strategies to help your congregation and community find connections and move beyond polarization.

This 90-minute workshop will offer the opportunity to learn about resources for clergy and lay leaders as well as to provide practical tools for navigating conversations about politics.   It is often thought that conversations about politics should not happen in the context of church. However, being able to have discussions about what is important in the work of communities and government can lead to greater connection and the ability to ask the questions:

    • How does my faith impact my political thinking?
    • How does government impact my faith?
    • How can I be a part of a faith community where we might not all agree about politics?
    • Is it OK to talk about politics with other people of faith?
    • Is it OK to talk about politics at church?

    REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  April 26, 2024

This is a virtual course. The course consists of a 5-day classroom experience followed by individual fieldwork. The fieldwork entails completing a project related to one of the focus points covered in class, and participating in a series of teleconferences.

This 5-day course combines the Interim Ministry 1 (the work of the leader) and the Interim Ministry 2 (the work of the congregation) courses. It is designed for those individuals who have already discerned God’s call to interim ministry. Interim Ministry Training focuses on the work of the interim minister as he/she leads a congregation through the time of transition, as well as on the work of the congregation during this journey.

To enhance the learning experience, participants are required to complete six pre-work assignments. Class begins at 9:00 AM (ET) and ends at 4:00 PM each day, Monday - Friday. Fieldwork starts about 30 days after the last day of class and consists of five conference calls conducted in approximately 30-day intervals. Fieldwork expectations are explained in-depth during the training event. Note: Applicants who previously completed IM1, and who now wish to complete their training in order to be recognized as an Intentional Interim Minister, please contact Anne.Tambling@healthychurch.org for more information.

    Cost of this training: $1740

Training Facilitator is Rev. Dr. Les Robinson. Les worked with the Center for Congregational Health for 21 years before he retired in June 2017. Not only has Les written the training curriculum for Intentional Interim Ministry, but many trainers for educating Intentional Interim Ministers across the world have also adapted his curriculum.

    DeInstituting the Institution
How do you move your church to try something new? We know that many things about the institution of church are not working today but moving a congregation to think differently about how we define "church" can be a challenge. Learn about nontraditional churches and ministries to inspire imagination and learn consulting skills to help navigate the conversations within your church and inspire holy curiosity about what the church can be today.

Following the workshop, congregations will also have the option to work with a consultant to utilize the tools in the workshops in their own contexts for an additional fee.

    Led by Rev. Anne Tambling

In a society focused on radical individualism, the idea of community is often elusive. This is a time for us to lead a shared path out of isolation, fear, and the false notion of scarcity! Imagine a future where people are not isolated by the transitions inherent to life but are uplifted by communities that recognize the strength in unity and the power of shared experiences. Through this workshop, we will explore our own need for connection and find ways to create compassionate communities of mutual support, both in our own lives and the communities where we serve. Each participant will go away with tools to use in their own life as we build a path out of isolation, fear, and scarcity.

The period of transition after the departure of a minister is an incredibly important and vulnerable time for a congregation. Today, more than ever, this period is filled with questions about the future of the congregation and its staffing needs and desires. Finances, attendance, facilities, beliefs are all topics that have to be addressed during a time with no ministerial leadership. As churches needs increase during this transition period, organizations and denominations that previously provided support are no longer able to do so at the level required by congregations. There is a great need for consultants trained specifically for this time period in the life of a congregation.

Transition Consultant training will provide you with concrete tools to use with congregations, an awareness of how to navigate conflict that may arise, and a framework for how to walk alongside a congregation in transition. This framework helps a congregation to clarify its mission, strategize for the future, and navigate the details of the search process.

Faith communities are looking for assistance in meeting the increasingly complex challenges of mission, ministry and congregational life. The programmatic, cookie-cutter answers once offered by denominations and traditional consultants are now often inadequate to meet these challenges. The need is growing for consultants who can provide more personalized, context-specific help to faith communities.

To meet this growing need for qualified consultants, the Center for Congregational Health is offering a process to train and develop consultants to work with faith communities. The training consists of a 4-day classroom experience, followed by individual fieldwork and participation in a series of teleconferences.

Dates:  The dates for the in-person class are October 28 - 31, 2024. The lab will begin at 10 am on Monday (9 am T, W, Th) and conclude Thursday by 5 pm.  The training will be held in the Charlotte, NC area.

    Costs for training:

    • Standard: $1950
    • This event is partially underwritten by a grant.  The cost of this training is $1200.

Please note: a quality learning experience is dependent upon a minimum number of active participants. The Center reserves the right to cancel any training event that does not reach a minimum of 10. Please take this into consideration when making travel arrangements.

(Registration for this course will be live by August 1.)
